Are the roads in Costa Rica paved?
Because we aim to keep this blog honest and complete, Please be aware that some roads in Costa Rica are different from what you’re used to driving on. You have to take into consideration that still some roads can be rough, unpaved and dirt. Especially the smaller roads leading to beautiful accommodations with stunning mountain views or secluded jungle settings can be challenging to access. Sometime you have to pass some rivers, but in general it is very doable to drive yourself in Costa Rica. For those trips, we highly recommend renting a 4×4 vehicle.
The roads in Samara itself are mostly paved and towards Nicoya and Carrillo also very well paved. So, from Nicoya, the rest of the country is easily reachable. The road to Buenavista, Playa Barrigona to Garza is still dirt and unpaved. Depending on the period of time during the year the quality of the road is bad to worse. Is it Safe to Drive Yourself in Costa Rica?
Yes, it’s safe to drive yourself in Costa Rica; however, it’s different from driving in Europe, North America, or other destinations. Be prepared for slow-moving traffic due to frequent traffic jams. Most roads are just two lanes, so when a truck is driving slowly, everyone else has to as well. You may also encounter cows, horses, or other animals on the road—or occasionally, a fallen tree. Road construction can often lead to delays.
In the rainy season, driving can be more adventurous, as rivers may flood or become impassable due to high water levels. But fortunately, rental cars are well-suited for these kinds of adventures. So no worries and enjoy the Pura Vida drive in Costa Rica.
Drive during daylight hours so you can clearly see the roads and any potholes. Some roads have ditches along the sides to drain rainwater, which are hard to spot in the dark.

We recommend renting a 4×4 vehicle to ensure smooth access to all roads, including mountain routes. Treat yourself to a suitable car for Costa Rica’s terrain, so you can fully enjoy the drives and make the most of your holiday adventures. While it’s not strictly necessary, it’s certainly convenient and relaxing to know that your car can access any road along the way.
It’s wise to travel during daylight hours rather than after dark, when it’s harder to see potholes, animals crossing, and other obstacles. Make sure to keep your fuel tank filled and bring plenty of drinking water for the journey.
One great advantage of driving yourself in Costa Rica is that people are very willing to help if you need directions or assistance. Costa Ricans are friendly and happy to lend a hand to each other and to visitors.
Most people recommend using Waze for navigating in Costa Rica, but we’ve also had good experiences with Google Maps. Our best tip is to set your route on the app before you leave your starting point, while you still have Wi-Fi or mobile data. As long as you don’t close the app during the drive, you should be able to follow the route even if you lose internet connection along the way.
Driving licence, credit card and copy passport is needed by car rental:
Always carry a copy of your passport (with the customs arrival date stamp), your driver’s license, and the rental car papers. Costa Rica is a friendly and peaceful country, with no army and a small police force, but you might encounter a police checkpoint. As long as you have all the required documents, it’s a quick stop, often accompanied by a friendly “Pura Vida” greeting.
And, of course, remember that you’ll need your credit card to pay for the rental car.
